Staggering Around… August 21, 2008

I’m off an holiday once more, and so have dredged up a few more nibblings from elsewhere…
- Justin at Chicken Yoghurt gives the PM a lusty kicking for telling troops in Afghanistan that they show “exactly the same courage, professionalism and dedication” as Britain’s Olympic athletes.
“He is of course, however, exactly right. Our troops are just like our Olympians. They’re underfunded and spend most of their time abroad. They perform obscure activities that we only pay attention to once in a blue moon before turning over to watch the X-Factor. And politicians love their reflected glory unless they’re losing in which case they get barely a mention.”
- Hilzoy at Obsidian Wings finds yet another example of the McCain campaign playing the POW gambit:
“”The reality is they have some investment properties and stuff. It’s not as if he lives in ten houses. That’s just not the case,” Rogers said. “The reality is they have four that actually could be considered houses they could use.” (…)
He also added: “This is a guy who lived in one house for five and a half years — in prison,” referring to the prisoner of war camp that McCain was in during the Vietnam War.”
- The Filthy Smoker – at Devil’s Kitchen – savages a study that bemoans the lack of ’spontaneity’ in British Bank Holidays, and suggests that celebrations of Britishness are needed. Well, how the hell would that be spontaneous? Do read.
