The Support Base Of Obsession October 22, 2008

A new periodical for Clerical Leaders, The Judeo-Christian view, claims that have delivered copies of Obsession to 325,000 rabbis, pastors and priests from every Jewish and Christian congregation in America. The Publishers – led by O’Neal Dozier of The Worldwide Christian Centre – oppose the rise of “militant secular-paganism, militant Islam, or bothbut warn againstbigotry against peaceful Muslims.

Well, Dozier obviously wasn’t considering this when he took part in a protest against the construction of a Mosque

When the commission meeting started, opponents of the mosque spoke.

“People in the neighborhood feel less safe knowing Muslims are invading,” Dozier said.

And he probably didn’t remember it when he argued that…

The Islamic religion in my view is a cult. On the show I said that Islam is a dangerous religion.

Indeed, Dozier is a big believer in the “MOOSLIMS ARE COMIN’” claims. He was sacked from Florida Governor Charlie Crist’s campaign committee after distributing these delightful Jack Chick tracts..

According to him the tracts are are “just right to help [people] understand the dangers of Islam”. Just as good as Obsession, anyway.

The Judeo-Christian View, like other backers of Obsession, is wildly opposed to Obama. They compare his record on late-term abortions – or, “child sacrifice” – and gay rights unfavourably to McCain’s, and launch an entertaining attack on “G_d-forbidden carnal desires and volitional decisions to pursue immoral sexual relations“.

Before they claim to oppose homophobia (wait, they do) here’s Dozier again, quoted on the Good As You site…

“Why is it one of the paramount of sins? Well, it is a very bad kind of sin because it really hurts society in so many ways. God, however, found a way to punish the homosexuals through HIV-AIDS. It is a type of judgment for such a sin as this one, homosexuality.”

He speaks more from sorrow than anger however, as he…

“…d[oes]n’t want to see God destroy America in the way he destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.”

Noice.

So, how did this fearmongering bigot get hold of 325,000 copies of Obsession? And when will Raphael Shore admit that his film promotes fear and hatred of Muslims, and not merely of “radical Islamists”?

Hi, I’ve been working on promotions for this movie, and I don’t know anything about O’Neal Dozier, but I do know about the movie itself and I do want to take issue with this:

“And when will Raphael Shore admit that his film promotes fear and hatred of Muslims, and not merely of ‘radical Islamists’?”

Please explain. The film includes a) a disclaimer at the beginning that very explicitly states this movie is not about most Muslims. This disclaimer is available on the Wikipedia article about the film, and b) Daniel Pipes estimates that the radicalized population of Muslims is probably about 15%. He has been attacked for this number as being made-up, but in fact it is based on actual research figures.

Seems to me the critics would rather make big claims to discredit the film rather than discuss what is actually in it.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for dropping by.

Here’s my own brief review of the film, and here’s one from Hope Not Hate. I can’t claim that either are at all comprehensive, but I’ll repeat a few points.

Firstly, there’s the contributors: what a bunch they are. Brigitte Gabriel has claimed that “every practising Muslim is a radical Muslim”, Steve Emerson thought the Oklahoma bombings had “a Middle Eastern trait” and the idiotic Walid Shoebat has called Islam “a satanic cult”. Did you expect nuance or balance from such a gaggle of fools and bigots? Indeed, the only Islamic Studies professor that the makers interviewed had this to say:

“But the material from some of the speakers gives the lie to the disclaimer: many of them are not experts, or have used the mantle of academic qualifications to purvey hate. That their alarmist drivel should be mixed with my whittled down interview proves that the intent of the film is not to educate, but to mislead. The free distribution of the film to voters in particular districts shows the political chicanery that is the motive, and the secrecy about the financing of the distribution only underlines the evil intent in circulating this vile piece of propaganda.”

The makers claim that radical Islamism represents “part of a single threat” – a “Global Jihad” – but the political analysis is embarrassing. There’s a reference to “the Palestinian war in Israel“, and Caroline Glick claims that Russia is “dealing with” radical Islamism in Chechnya. Do I need to point out how absurd these statements are, or do the makers of Obsession have precisely no knowledge in the area of international affairs?

There’s also a bizarre section on Islamism in Britain, which will only feed the foaming of Jack Chick and his ilk. The sect Al-Muhajiroun had already disbanded when the film was made, and the absurd Anjem Choudary only “speaks for a tiny, and dwindling, minority of uncouth extremists“. So why, I wonder, was there an emphasis on him?

In short, the viewers are given disparate examples of bigotry and violence – several of them grossly exaggerated – and are led to believe that they should be fearing “several Nazi Germanys“. With Darwish also claiming that Islamic immigrants “are not trying to be part of the American way of life“, the implication is clear.

The only thing that this movie can achieve is inspire hatred and fear of Muslims. In leading citizens to an acceptance of the necessity of attacks, this will serve the cause of American imperialism.

I’m also extremely interested as to the backers of the Clarion Fund, how Dozier gained 325,000 copies of Obsession and why a prominent anti-Obama activist was hired to help with the promotion.

Incidentally, around a hundred people read my blog, and millions have been mailed Obsession, so you can rest assured that I won’t be able to “discredit” it in the eyes of many.

Best wishes,

Ben
