“We Have Nothing…” May 10, 2009

The hundreds of thousands fleeing America’s airborne flexing of muscles won’t be pleased to find their own military coming the other way…
“The Pakistani army’s assault against Islamic militants in Buner, in northwest Pakistan, is flattening villages, killing civilians and sending thousands of farmers and villagers fleeing from their homes, residents escaping the fighting said Monday.”
The New York Times has described the offensive as being “surprisingly vigorous“, but horrific violence was entirely predictable after continual aimless accusations of weakness (assumedly for the prior unwillingness to slaughter people pointlessly).
Around 500,000 have been made refugees by the fighting, bringing the number of internally displaced Pakistanis over a million. “The operation will go on till the situation returns to normal,” Zardari has said, but with US missiles and government artillery claiming untold innocent lives, as well as the Taliban’s ruthless murders, it’s difficult to see whose normality is being considered. For the people, their once-peaceful lives shattered by an whirlwind of human cruelty, there’s only pain, anger and bewilderment…
“We have nothing,” the woman said, standing amid a sea of other refugees. She arrived Friday with eight relatives. “We have no blankets and no food. The government is bombing us from the mountains, and the Taliban is shooting at us from the city…
“The army and the Taliban are not killing each other — they are friends,” the woman said. “They are only killing civilians. When civilians are killed, the government says they have killed a bunch of terrorists.”
The cheery tagline “A paradise on earth” that adorns the Swat Valley website is among the most dumbly tragic things I’ve seen.
I think it is pathetic more on the liberal left aren’t condemning this for what it is: a catastrophic waste of human life for a pointless and unachievable goal. Yeah so Obama is a lot better than Bush on climate change: let’s ignore lots of brown people being killed because we don’t like the Taliban either! Tosh, I say. Well done for highlighting it.
Zardari is scum, the US army are scum – oh yeah, Obama is scum too. I realise this now. No amount of solar panels or state-funded domestic healthcare can atone for the deaths of these innocent people. If I ever see the POTUS, I will tell him to fuck off. I just can’t believe I ignored all of this!
