Obama administration officials, fearing a battle with Congress that could stall plans to close the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, are crafting language for an executive order that would reassert presidential authority to incarcerate terrorism suspects indefinitely, according to three senior government officials with knowledge of White House deliberations.
In other words: Obama administration officials, fearing that the law might not be on their side, are planning to bypass it. Again.
I read that different, I read that as inherited mess, ahrd to take apart plus a congress that still backs draconian measures.
PS: Obama still does more good than ‘bad’, look at the initiative to push AIDS testing in the US, he goes, along with Michelle, to get tested.
He has too much good about his ideas and approach to be de-railed by inheriting a bucket of shit from the last administration.
I disagree, and don’t really see why the inherited shit should influence his decision. I don’t have any sympathy with Congress, but closing Guantanamo only to keep indefinite detention is no positive change at all.
(Incidentally – in case you didn’t see my comment before, I was bloody late to reply – I enjoyed the film.)
By inherited shit I mean, if you start in a job with such a poor inherited position, yes you have the benefit of looking good if you can speak clearly and not fall over your feet but also you have to remedy scenarios that are lose-lose at the best of times.
I have no symapthy with Congree but I referenced them as a device to hold back Obama’s better instincts.
Glad you enjoyed the short.
Peace.
Can I also chip in that last few days at the Whitehouse they’ve celebrated Stonewall and had the first Whitehouse Gay, Lesbian, Bi-Sexual Event to champion those rights…I mean this is like a world away from the last 8 years, it feels so civilised and on the right track.
I’m glad that Obama champions gay rights, but as he’s reneged on his promise to reverse “Don’t ask, don’t tell” – as well as his admin. defending the Defense of Marriage Act – he’s not actually granting those rights.
The biggest problem I have with his admin. is massive insincerity. I mean, the US is still terrible in upholding human rights; truly terrible. Not only are there the drones in Pakistan – which we know are pointless and bloody- there’s the indefinite detentions (including – in the case of Ibrahim Jassam – a reporter whose own government ordered that he be released), and the adoption of Bush-era secrecy policies. This is terribly depressing, considering the horse that they rode in on.
More cheerily, congratulations on the film. Fame in the offing!
